The Mediterranean Sea

The Mediterranean Sea covers an area of 2.5million sq km (965,000 sq mi) and has an average depth of 1,500 metres (4,900 feet).

The Romans called the Mediterranean Mare Nostrum (Our Sea).

The coast of the Mediterranean runs past 22 countries.

The five largest islands in the Mediterranean are Sicily, Sardinia, Cyprus, Corsica and Crete.


The only island nations in the Mediterranean are Malta and Cyprus.
