What is an Arcade?
An arcade is an architectural structure defined by a series of arches supported by columns or piers. The configuration creates a passageway or open area often used to define spaces and/or offer protection from the elements for those walking beneath it. Dating back to the Ancient Roman era, arcade architecture has been a popular element in structural design over the past 2,000 years. The word "arcade" is taken from the French word "arcata," meaning "arch" -- a word that itself is descended from the root "arcus," denoting "bow." Similar in structure, a "colonnade" is also supported by piers or columns, but rather than employing arches supports a horizontal plane. (Resource: Study.com)
